Visual storytelling is the heart of the moving pictures. It’s the canvas that the masters of filmmaking use to create narratives, paint emotions, convey thoughts and ideas.
Camera movement, editing, framing, colours, lighting and composition all play a role in how we perceive and feel the stories we see on the screen.
In this 6-week course, we’ll explore visual storytelling in all its elements and power through films by some of the best visual storytellers in cinema, including Jean Renoir, Alfred Hitchcock, Federico Fellini, Stephen Soderbergh, François Ozon, Claire Denis and Bong Joon-Ho.
Ruth Mulandi gained a BA in Film & Drama from the University of Reading, and has since then worked in the cultural and voluntary sectors in management, development, fundraising and outreach roles, including with Papatango Theatre, Camden Arts Centre and the National Gallery. Since then, she’s also taught film studies and art history for the WEA as well as one-off classes and talks for many different organisations.
