Learn to hand embroider a beautifully designed Crewelwork piece, with the addition of some embellishment to create an entrancing work of art suitable for beginners. “Jacobean Owl,” designed by Jung Byun is the perfect introduction to crewelwork, covering 30 traditional stitches.
Term begins with an overview and history of the ancient technique worked using traditional thread and fabric, which always seems fresh and contemporary in its multitude of textures and stitches. Stitched with Appleton wools thread on calico, students will be guided step by step to learn
multiple stitches by practicing first before adding to the finished piece.
Stiches include:
- Battlement couching
- Block shading
- Stem stitch
- Fly stitch
- Fishbone stitch
- Raised stem band
- Whipped & woven wheels
- Long & short etc
The kit which includes fabric printed with the design, wool threads, needles, beads and metallic thread is made available for students to purchase at a low cost price.
Kate Pankhurst
After a long and successful career in publishing, Kate has developed a second, successful career in Embroidery. She trained at the Royal School of Needlework, graduating with a distinction from the RSN Future Tutors Programme. Kate is now a fellow of the RSN and has a number of prestigious prizes and awards to her name. See Kate’s website, www.artofstitch.com, for examples of her work.
Jung Byun is a hand embroidery artist and Royal School of Needlework tutor. Graduating from the RSN’s Future Tutors programme with distinction in 2019, Jung had previously graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Clothing and Textiles in 1993 and spent several years working as a fashion trend forecaster, fashion reporter and organic clothing trader. Her hand embroidery pieces have been widely exhibited including Hapton Court Palace, the Knitting and Stitching shows, the Fashion & Textile Museum. Jung’s Appliqué piece of Hampton Court Palace was published in Made in Britain magazine. Jung won the worshipful company of the Broderers award in Hand and lock prize for hand embroidery in 2019 for the best use of hand embroidery technique.
