In this course we will discover travelling French authors who shared their experience of unknown lands through short stories, letters, articles and diaries. Each week, we will explore the extraordinary journeys and fortunes, and discuss extracts from 19th and 20th century authors such as Victor Hugo - Basque country, Delacroix - Normandie, Maupassant - Corsica; Albert Londres - French Guiana, Flora Tristan - Latin America; Blaise Cendrars - early California, Isabelle Eberhardt - North Africa, Germaine Tillon - Algeria, Saint-Exupéry - Africa, Odette du Puigaudeau - Sahara and fascinating contemporary travellers such as Nicolas Bouvier, Alexandre Poussin, Sylvain Tesson, Bernard Ollivier, Isabelle Autissier, André Brugiroux.
Extracts will be supplied weekly in advance by Agnès, in the original French language and discussed in French.
Agnes Gatineau
Agnes has taught French as a foreign language for over 25 years, including 10 + years at HLSI. She studied at the Sorbonne Nouvelle and later at University College, London. Although Agnes has returned to live in France she remains a very popular online French tutor at HLSI.
