Music Appreciation: Romanticism to Modernism

This six-week course will examine how the changes in music developed from the late 19th century into the 20th century.  We will look at the influence of composers such as Debussy, Strauss, Mahler and Brahms, and the music developed by composers, including Schoenberg, Britten and Shostakovich.

Lectures will include plenty of music clips as well as piano demonstrations.  No technical music knowledge is required.

Dr Owen Leech is a London-based composer, conductor, and educator. His music has been performed and broadcast internationally and he currently serves as composer-in-residence at the Kodály/Colourstrings-based North London Conservatoire, where he also teaches piano, composition and musicianship and works as a conductor and pianist. As a conductor, he's worked with a variety of orchestras and ensembles including the North London Sinfonia, of which he's been music director since 2006.
