This course examines how twentieth century authors used the winter and the festive season for exploring domestic spaces and family dynamics, psychological isolation, the sublime power of nature, end-of-year self-reflection, and the quiet promise of eventual renewal. We will look at this motif through a range of genres and themes, delving into the work of authors who were exploring the century’s huge social shifts around class, equality and opportunity, including Philip Larkin, Stella Gibson, Barbara Pym, and Nancy Mitford.
