Brendan Fraser plays an American actor in modern day Tokyo, struggling to find purpose until he is hired by a Japanese “Rental family” agency playing standing roles for strangers. As he immerses in his clients’ world, he forms genuine bonds that blur the line between performance and reality. Confronting the moral complexities of his work, he rediscovers the quiet beauty of human connections.
The story is directed with great sensitivity and humour by Hikari. It gives us an interesting and unusual insight into Japanese urban culture in an amusing and touching way.
