Adventures in Democracy: The Turbulent World of People Power
Erica Benner writes, lectures and broadcasts on government and democracy. Her work has been called ‘remarkable’ by the New York Times and ‘fascinating, charming and enjoyably unorthodox’ by the Daily Telegraph. The Guardian describes her writing as ‘lively and compulsively readable’ while the Literary Review says her work is ‘engaging, clever, and entertaining’.
She is currently President of the European Society for the History of Political Thought, and has taught at Oxford and Yale Universities and the London School of Economics. She currently teaches at the Hertie School for Governance in Berlin.
Her acclaimed biography of Machiavelli Be Like the Fox was a BBC Book of the Week, and her latest book Adventures in Democracy is a Financial Times pick for What to Read in 2024.
‘A page-turner full of wit, original insight and erudition…a sparkling account of people power through the ages’
The Guardian
‘Highly stimulating and wonderfully readable…Wherever she darts in history, Benner is a terrific guide. Her analysis of democracy’s strengths and weaknesses is forensic.’
