Our speaker on Thursday 31 October will be the geologist and historian of geology, Tom Sharpe.

Tom was curator of palaeontology at the National Museum of Wales and is a patron of Lyme Regis Museum.  His book, The Fossil Woman: A Life of Mary Anning was published by the Dovecote Press in 2020.

Mary Anning (1799-1847)made a living collecting and selling the fossils which abounded near Lyme Regis.  In 1824, the announcement of her discovery of the first near-complete example of a fossilised Plesiosaurus was greeted with much excitement  by the scientific community.  Its long neck and tiny head marked Plesiosaurus as an astonishingly strange beast and established Mary Anning’s international reputation as a palaeontologist.  The talk will cover her life and discuss her role in the early development of vertebrate palaeontology.

This will be a fascinating talk and we look forward to seeing you there.

Doors open at 7.30pm for an 8pm start.

Refreshments will be served in the Victoria Hall.

Free to all. Please book, for online link only, by 1pm on the day of the event
