Philip Hammond is Emeritus Professor of Media and Communications at London South Bank University. His books include Media, War and Postmodernity and Framing Post-Cold War Conflicts.

In his lecture he will question how far news photographs convey the ‘reality’ of war. How far is the meaning of such images open to interpretation? He will discuss historical and contemporary examples of photos being framed, staged and manipulated in order to create particular meanings, and ask what happens to the ‘truth’ of images in an era when photographs are digitised, when the military use virtual environments to train for combat, and when acts of war themselves sometimes appear to be staged as media spectacles.
