Attkins Memorial Lecture
John Callow is an author, historian and trade unionist. He has written widely on politics, witchcraft, and popular culture. His books include Witchcraft & Magic in Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century Europe, James II: King in Exile, Embracing the Darkness: A Cultural History of Witchcraft, and The Last Witches of England: A Tragedy of Sorcery and Superstition.
He has appeared on the BBC’s The One Show to discuss the roots of Hallowe’en; on the BBC Radio 4 documentary It Must be Witchcraft; on Find My Past’s The Great Fire of London, and on the Discovery Channel’s four-part series The Salem Witches. He has also appeared regularly on the History Hit podcast series.
Drawing on his book Marx in London, which he co-authored with Asa Briggs, John will link the story of Marx’s life in London to the places he lived and worked.
Marx lived in London as a political exile from 1849 until his death in 1883. He spent most of the first years in Soho before moving to Kentish Town in 1856. Other places of significance to his life include the British Museum Reading Room, where he worked on Capital; Covent Garden, where the meetings of the First International took place, and Hampstead Heath, where Marx and his friends spent family Sundays.
