Charles Glass is an American-British award-winning author, journalist and broadcaster who has specialised in the Middle East and World Wars I and II. He was ABC News Chief Middle East Correspondent from 1983 to 1983. Before that, he worked at the Observer, London Weekend Television and Newsweek. He has contributed to the Guardian, the Spectator, Granta, New Statesman, the Telegraph, London Review of Books and many other British and American publications.
While researching a book in Lebanon in 1987, he himself was taken hostage by Shi’a militants, from whom he eventually escaped. He wrote about his ordeal in his book Tribes With Flags. His latest book arises from ordeals of a different kind: the devastating effects of shell-shock, or what we now know as PTSD, on the minds of First World War combatants. Among them were England’s two finest war poets, Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, fellow patients at a pioneering hospital in Scotland.
