Andrew MacDonald’s work has been about people from the moment he started painting ten years ago.

He trained as a classical violinist and worked as a professional performer and teacher for 30 years. In 2015 he came across the image of an African American woman protesting against police brutality in the US. Unable to express how he felt in words or music, he found himself in an art shop.

Andrew had never painted before, so this was a bolt out of the blue. A few years later, he gave up his teaching post, committed to portrait painting, and now works to commission.

His exhibition at Highgate Gallery from 7-20 March 2025 will combine commissioned works, portraits from his own collection and his 12 Hornsey Foodbank Portraits. As well as original works for sale, all his portraits are available as limited edition prints in various sizes. He believes that art should be affordable and by providing museum quality prints he hopes to make his work more readily available with a range of prices.

The 2024 Hornsey Foodbank Portraits, reflecting people involved in the Foodbank, were made to raise funds for the Foodbank and awareness of food poverty. Andrew and Thomas Skovsende, a local photographer, have made a book of the project which will be available to buy during the exhibition and afterwards. Print costs were covered by a generous donation so every penny of the £10 price will go to Hornsey Foodbank.

Andrew’s work reflects a continual fascination with who we are, how we feel, what our history etches onto our features, and our responses to and relationship with the world around us.

He will be at the gallery throughout the run, to talk about his work, the commissioning process and to answer any questions.
